New research on early intervention with power wheelchairs

Disability Support Services is pleased to be working with Enable New Zealand on a research project to explore the benefits of earlier intervention in high-performance power wheelchairs.

International research shows that earlier access to high-performance power wheelchairs can increase independence and prevent injuries and hospital admissions. While cheaper options might provide short-term cost-savings, they can also drive higher long-term health and support costs, which end up costing disabled people, and New Zealand, more.

DSS is working with Enable NZ on this project which aims to test these assumptions in the New Zealand context.

In this two-year research project, known as Mobility for Life, 100 people with progressive conditions, such as Multiple Sclerosis and Cerebral Palsy will receive high-performance power wheelchairs. The project will monitor and evaluate any benefits to their independence, participation and quality of life. An independent evaluation will track what difference this makes in their day-to-day lives.

Enable NZ will coordinate the delivery pathway. This includes assessor engagement, clinical review, supplier coordination, purchasing, fitting logistics, asset management, repairs and maintenance.

While this research project is limited to the areas which Enable NZ serves, its findings will inform how power wheelchairs are provided in the future, and guide decisions about funding and policy.
