Work underway on support for family carers

New work is underway to improve how family carers are recognised and supported.

DSS will be developing a package of financial and other support, giving more certainty and consistency for family carers. This could include a carer payment, improved respite options, and other practical support.

Family carers play an essential role in supporting disabled people every day. Family care needs to be fair, practical, and sustainable over time.

Currently, some disabled people use flexible funding to formally employ a family or whānau member to provide care.

The carer support package will look at better ways to support family carers than formal employment arrangements

This work will take time. DSS will be working with carer groups and representatives to shape the work over coming months.

We will share updates and opportunities for input as the work progresses.

The carer support package is part of a much wider work programme to strengthen disability support services in the long term.

There are no changes to any current supports and arrangements. Disabled people and their carers should continue to access support as they do now.
