Understand your rights and what to do if they're not being met.

What are your rights?

Under the Code of Health and Disability Services Consumers' Rights, you have the right to:

  • be treated fairly and with respect
  • live with dignity and independence
  • have good care and support that fits your needs
  • be told everything you need to know about your care and support in a way you understand
  • make choices about your care and support.
  • have support.
  • decide if you want to be part of training, teaching or research.
  • make a complaint.

If you're receiving DSS-funded support and services you have the right to expect these to be safe and high-quality. This page explains how we review services providers we fund to make sure they are consistently delivering good care and support.

Your right to make a complaint 

You have the right to complain if you are not happy with:

  • a disability service or support you have received
  • the outcome of a needs assessment for services and support
  • a DSS policy or staff member.
