New funding will progress workforce safeguarding capability initiatives in response to the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care.
The $16.8 million package across Government, as outlined in the latest Panui from the Crown Response Office external, is over three years, and being drawn down from Budget 2025 workforce contingency funding.
It includes new funding for DSS, to lead initiatives relating to:
- delivering targeted safeguarding training for disability care and support workers
- creating safeguarding resources for family and whānau carers of disabled people, and the disabled people they care for
Progress on previous RCOI related initiatives
Budget 2025 also included $8.8 million in funding for DSS external in response to the “Making the Care System Safe – Recognising and Responding to Abuse of Disabled People in Care” initiative.
This included funding to introduce an enhanced audit programme, improve our quality management system, and a project to support providers with their care records management.
