More than 860 people took part in the 2026 Disability Support Services (DSS) consultation, sharing their experiences and suggestions about what good support looks like.
People told us what a good disability support system could look like – one that is easier to use and understand, responsive to people’s needs, gives people confidence in decisions, and better recognises the role of carers.
People said that a good disability support system includes:
- support and services that are built around people's individual needs
- support that plans for and responds to life changes and changing circumstances
- information and services that are easier to find, understand and navigate
- confidence that decisions are fair, transparent and consistent
- greater choice and flexibility in how supports are used
- better recognition and support for carers and whānau.
The feedback will be used to help shape practical improvements to services and information, as well as longer-term work to strengthen Disability Support Services.
We will continue to keep the disability community informed about what we’re doing, how feedback has helped shape decisions, and opportunities for input into further improvements.
